"Another Planet" - International Museum Day

This year, the Museum and Memorial Site in Bełżec began observing the International Museum Day on May 14th-15th. On Saturday and Sunday, free guided tours through the grounds of the former death camp in Bełżec and the museum exhibition were organized.

The opening of the photographic exhibition "ANOTHER PLANET" by Yaron Reshef took place on May 16. The author came across the term "another planet" while reading the testimony of the writer Yehiel Dinur. Dinur described Auschwitz as "another planet," a place where morality did not apply. Yaron Reshef showed the contemporary memorial sites on the grounds of the former German Nazi death camps in Bełżec, Treblinka, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Majdanek using 360° camera technology. Working with a 360° camera gave the artist a new perspective and allowed him to create a new photographic reality which brings to mind the term "another planet".

Together with the author of the exhibition, the Museum was visited by Vira (Wiktoria) Bornstein nee Lewenton, a Holocaust survivor. It is truly difficult to find words to describe the ultimate atrocities of the Holocaust. Therefore, the words of those who managed to survive the Genocide are all the more important. Vira shared her experiences with the assembled guests.

International Museum Day (IMD) is an international day held annually on or around 18 May, coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM).
