Ceremony commemorating the Jewish population of Tomaszów Lubelski

On May 22, 2018, the celebrations of the 76th anniversary of the largest deportation of Jews from the ghetto in Tomaszów Lubelski were organized.

At the beginning of the feast of Szawout in May 1942, several hundred citizens were deported in Tomaszów Mazowiecki.

One of the survivors remembers that day: ‘murders run even with greater impetus like wild animals, seeking, pulling out people of the holes, basements and attics and dragged them to the meeting point. Whoever was not able to go, was killed on the spot…’.

The commemorating ceremonies were organised in cooperation with Museum-Memorial Site in Bełżec and the City Hall of Tomaszów Lubelski. In the Municipal Public Library of Tomasz Zamoyski invited guests headed by Mayor Wojciech Żukowski and the youth from the Middle School No.1 of Defenders of Lwow in Tomaszów Lubelski and Public Middle School of the Righteous among the Nations in Bełżec listened to a lecture given by Ewa Koper entitled ‘The Holocaust of Tomaszów Jews’.

Then the city authorities, the employees of the Museum - Memorial Site in Bełżec, and the youth went to the area of the former Jewish quarter to commemorate the murdered Jews of Tomaszów. At the monument wreaths were laid and candles were lit.
