Commemorating the victims of the death camp in Bełżec on the 74th aanniversary of the first deportations
On the 74th anniversary of the first deportations to the camp, on March 17, 2016, celebrations commemorating the victims of the Holocaust took place at the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec.
On March 17, 1942, Nazi Germany started the physical extermination of Jews living in the General Government and those transported from other European countries, by deporting them from Lublin and Lvov to the death camp in Bełżec. Following Bełżec, other extermination camps were built soon in Sobibór (May) and Treblinka (July) where Jews were killed by gassing with carbon monoxide in stationary gas chambers. Mass murder was combined with mass exploitation of labour force and plundering of the victims' property. The cryptonym for this genocide was "Aktion Reinhardt."
On the 74th anniversary of the first deportations to the camp, on March 17, 2016, celebrations commemorating the victims of the Holocaust took place at the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec. Students of Piotr Firlej High School in Lubartów delivered a verbal and musical performance in the education room. The performance was emotional and related to the tradition and history of Polish Jews – their daily lives and religion as well as the Holocaust enacted by the Germans during World War II. The celebrations commemorating the victims of the camp – prayer, laying flowers and lighting grave candles – were held in the area of the memorial in Ohel Niche. The youth, representatives of local authorities and invited guests took part in them.
