HISTORY – EDUCATION – MEMORY
On September 23rd, the Museum and Memorial Site in Bełżec organized a seminar "History - Education - Memory" - this is the third event whose aim is to present topics from the history of World War II, concerning the extermination of Jews, as well as museums in post-camp memorial sites. This year's seminar was held in September as part of the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II.
The seminar began with the lighting of candles in the Nisha Ohel in tribute to the victims of the death camp. Opening the seminar, the head of MMP, Tomasz Hanejko, said: “The meeting like this is an opportunity to discuss, integrate and establish contacts and exchange experiences between the local community of educators and historians.”
The adopted formula of the seminar assumes that every year, apart from the invited speakers and researchers dealing with particular aspects of the Second World War, the lecture is given by an employee of the Museum and Memorial Site in Bełżec.
The seminar was concluded with a screening of the film "Who will write our history" directed by Roberta Grossman. It is a fictionalized documentary about the Underground Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto, which was initiated in 1940 by Emanuel Ringelblum together with his collaborators. The Archive is a collection of documents, one of the most important testimonies of the annihilation of Polish Jews. The film was made available to the Museum by the Forum for Dialogue, which is a partner in promoting film screenings in Poland. Forum has also prepared didactic materials - a package of lesson plans based on the film script.
