The Jewish workers sorting and unstitching the clothing couldn’t misappropriate anything, and didn’t want to. What good money or valuables to us? We could not buy anything, and we had no hope of staying alive. None of us believed in miracles. Every worker was searched very carefully, but we often walked around on scattered dollars that hadn’t been noticed. We didn’t even reach down for them. It was pointless and did us no good. Once, a shoemaker deliberately and openly pocketed five dollars. He and his son were both shot. He went to his death happily – he’d just wanted to get it over with. Death was certain, and what was the point of going on suffering? The dollars in Bełżec helped us – to die easier…
