International Museum Day 2020

On May 18, the International Museum Day is celebrated all across the globe.

The staff of the State Museum at Majdanek have for many years been participating in this annual event. This has been achieved through describing our work and involvement in the community service, presenting documents, relics, prisoners-related memorabilia, photographs, and testimonies from the museum’s collections and archives. As an institution, we foster the memory of both the people battered by the course of history, and the place where it happened. We struggle to preserve the tangible evidence of the crimes committed by the Nazis. We invest our everyday efforts not only in imparting the knowledge and reliable historical data to the next generations, but also in commemorating the prisoners of the German concentration camp at Majdanek and the death camps in Bełżec and Sobibór. Likewise, our goal is both to provide the visitors with an opportunity to experience the sites of the historic events, and to encourage them to individually reflect on the past.

The current extraordinary circumstances regarding the COVID-19 have forced us to move all our activities to the online domain. Therefore, this year’s celebrations of the International Museum Day will take place on the museum’s website and within our social media. The content that you will find there is going to incorporate the items and materials from the collections and the Archives of the State Museum at Majdanek. For the first time we are going to air a live broadcast from the museum’s grounds.

Additionally, to celebrate the International Museum Day 2020 together with you, we are offering a special discount within the museum’s online bookstore (-20% for the orders placed between May 15 and 18).*
