“Museum in Action” – the Museum’s activity in the new media
The transmission of the actual museum space into the online domain and employment of digital technologies in reaching out to the recipients are dominant topics within the contemporary museum discourse. Both issues were analysed and discussed during the training course addressed to the museum employees.
The event entitled “Modern Communication of Remembrance and the World War II Heritage. The Employment of Social Media and Multimedia in the Activity of the State Museum at Majdanek” was housed in the new research and education facility of the Museum and Memorial in Bełżec.
On June 24-25, the staff of the State Museum at Majdanek’s Department of Communications and External Relations, Agnieszka Kowalczyk-Nowak, Katarzyna Boraca, and Krzysztof Stanek, held a training session concerning the employment of social media in promoting the Museum’s activities. The analysis of each online communication channel was followed by sharing the experiences with each platform and service. The speakers emphasised the importance of the Museum’s presence on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter, and its role in the promoting both the knowledge about the camps and the commemoration of victims deported to the German Nazi camps in Lublin, Bełżec, and Sobibór. The representatives of various departments shared their views and ideas on the use of different channels in promoting various activities of the Museum.
Across 2020, over 550 entries were posted in our social media sites. Together with 250 tweets, the published content reached almost 2.5 million recipients. The Museum also published over 60 audio-visual materials of the 10-hour length combined in total. These included some former prisoners’ testimonies prepared as podcasts, as well as short documentaries focusing on the particular events and objects of the camps’ history. “Museum in Action” combines a series of courses and training sessions addressed to the employees of the State Museum at Majdanek. The exchange of ideas and sharing experiences between the representatives of various departments will allow us to improve the quality of internal communications, and to pursue the goals forming the foundation of our institution.
