Museum lesson about hope that helped survive the worst

On April 28, 2015, the State Museum at Majdanek was visited by the pupils from the 1st junior high school in Lublin, who participated in this year's Holocaust Remembrance Day and listened to a lecture on the ghetto in Warsaw and its relationship with the KL Lublin camp. The goal of the educational visit was to broaden their knowledge about the topic through acknowledging them with the biography of Halina Birenbaum, one of the few survivors among those deported from the ghetto in Warsaw to the concentration camp at Majdanek.

The museum lesson "A biographical walk with Halina Birenbaum" started with the projection of the movie titled "Hope Dies Last," which describes the war fates of her family members. Next the pupils, divided into in 4-person groups, on the basis of the excerpts from her memoires elaborated the topics related to the time Halina spent at Majdanek. The topics concerned the transport to the camp, camp admission procedure, everyday life in KL Lublin, the work of prisoners and the circumstances surrounding the trip from Majdanek to the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. During the sightseeing of the former camp grounds the participants of the project shared gained information and own impressions with their colleagues. At the end of the classes each pupil received a volume of Halina Birenbaum's poetry, which will allow the interested to deepen their knowledge about what did the heroine of the museum lesson experience in the camp and how did her life look like after war.
