NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR THE VICTIMS OF GERMAN NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMPS AND EXTERMINATION CAMPS
The youth from the 10th High School in Toruń joined in the commemoration of the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of German Nazi Concentration and Death Camps.
High school students visited the permanent exhibition and the memorial area. The meeting culminated in an educational activity entitled: "Survivors from Bełżec - a story of two people". The youth learnt the story of the survivors of the German extermination camp in Bełżec, Rudolf Reder and Chaim Hirszman.
Rudolf Reder (1881-1977), a factory owner from Lwów, was sent to the Bełżec camp in August 1942, when he was 61 years old. In November 1942, escorted by the Germans, he travelled to Lwów to bring back galvanised sheet metal from there. He escaped, taking advantage of the distraction of the guards. After the war, he reported a great number of information regarding his stay in the camp. Unable to find himself in the new communist reality, he decided to emigrate to Israel in 1950 and then to Canada.
The second survivor was Chaim Hirszman (1912-1946), who came from Janów Lubelski. In
November 1942, he was deported to the Belzec camp together with his family. Selected for work in the camp, he stayed there until its liquidation. In the summer 1943, he escaped from a transport carrying the last prisoners from Bełżec to the Sobibór camp. After the war, he joined
the Citizens' Militia and then the Office of Security. He was shot in March 1946 in Lublin by juvenile conspirators. He only managed to give a part of his account that day.
