The Museum has uncovered a fragment of the historical camp road that was built by the Majdanek prisoners with tombstones from Jewish cemeteries in Lublin. Apart from that in one of the exhibition barracks, there is a presentation on the history of Lublin of the occupation time.
“A window of time” is a steel construction which enables one to see the tombstones through reinforced glass. It is located on the road which crosses the economic sector of the former camp. There is also a plaque with a short historical comment in three languages: Polish, English and Hebrew. The idea of this project was to display and secure the original structure of the route. The tombstones were discovered while the museum’s roads and pavements were being renovated. The project presents not only the history of the Majdanek camp, but also history of the Jews in Lublin. Just before the beginning of the Second Wold War, there were about 40,000 Jews in Lublin, which constituted a third of all the city dwellers. A Jewish community had three cemeteries at that time. During the occupation, Germans destroyed Jewish cemeteries and took tombstones to the camp where they were used by the prisoners to reinforce the roads.
The history of Lublin of the period of occupation is documented also by 10 boards installed in barracks no. 44. They introduce to the places and buildings in the city which played a significant role during the German occupation. The boards contain historical commentaries (in Polish and English), and archival and contemporary photographs of the presented sites, including headquarters of “Aktion Reinhardt” (Law Faculty of the Catholic University of Lublin), labor camp in Wrońska Street or prison at the Lublin Castle.
