From March 28 to April 2, 2014, students from the Friedrich von Bodelschwingh Bethel School in Bielefeld and Secondary School No. 5 in Lublin participated in intercultural historical workshops, which developed their knowledge on the history of the German occupation of the Lublin region and the concentration camp at Majdanek.
Young Germans got familiar with selected issues concerning the history of the concentration camp, including female perpetrators, economic aspects of the camp functioning, trauma related with camp experiences as a turning point in the man’s life, common sufferings and solidarity among prisoners.
Topics related to functioning of KL Lublin were also researched by Polish students. They included such issues as resistance movement, fates of the deportees from the Zamość region, extermination of Jewish Majdanek prisoners – the mass execution of November 3, 1943. Apart from that the participants met with an eyewitness to the events taking place at Majdanek – Zdzisław Badio.
The workshops held on the authentic site enabled students to develop the past on their own, broaden their historical knowledge, get familiar with various types of historical sources, and commemorate the victims of the Nazi regime.
