Polish-German youth exchange. Educational workshop for students from Rzeszów and Hamburg
On September 26, a study visit at the Museum and Memorial Site in Bełżec of students from the Konarski Secondary School in Rzeszów and from the Gymnasium and Stadtteilschule Finkenwerder in Hamburg took place.
During their study visit, students learned about the history of the German Nazi extermination camp in Bełżec– they were guided around the historical exhibition and the area of commemoration. In the second part of the educational visit the youth took part in the workshop ‘From exclusion to extermination – the fate of Polish Jews on the example of the stories of Rudolf Reder and Mila Sandberg.’ On the basis of the accounts of the witnesses to history, the youth working in groups focused on the following topics: life in the ghetto, deportation, and escape from transport, segregation of prisoners from new transports in the death camp, selection and work of prisoners from the Sonderkommando. The participants of the workshop put the most important and the most moving information on their boards. The final part of the teamwork was the presentation of self-prepared boards, and sharing the knowledge gained during the stay as well as all the reflections which came up after reading the source materials.
