Programme “Accessible Culture” in the activities of the State Museum at Majdanek

The State Museum at Majdanek participates in the programme of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage “Accessible Culture” and performs a series of free museum lessons for pupils of middle and high schools. The main goal of this programme is to increase the participation of various social groups, including young people from small towns, in cultural life.

On May 14, 2015, pupils from Junior High School no. 2 in Zakręcie took part in the museum lesson “The lives of children in the concentration camp at Majdanek.” In the first part of the classes, participants listened to a lecture combined with a multimedia presentation about various groups of children transported to the concentration camp at Majdanek. They were also acquainted with biographies of four of these children – Henryk Żytomirski, Halina Birenbaum, Janina Buczek and Piotr Kiriszczenko. Pupils divided into 3-person groups read passages of memories by the museum lesson’s heroes, and they had to answer the questions related to their wartime experiences. In the next part of the project, pupils visited the former camp paying particular attention to the places directly related to the lives of children deported to this camp. Young people actively participated in guided tours and shared the knowledge that they acquired when reading the memories by the former prisoners of Majdanek.
