Project for the youth from Jan Zamoyski High School No. 1 in Zamość

A several years’ cooperation between the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec with the Jan Zamoyski High School No. 1 in Zamość resulted in the project carried out on April 22. A part of the project are annual interactive workshops titled "History and Holocaust of Jews in Zamość" commemorating the first Jewish deportation from Zamość to the death camp in Bełżec (April 2016).

Before the Second World War approximately 12,000 Jews lived in Zamość. The majority of them left the city together with the retreating Red Army in 1939. During the occupation, the number of Jews in Zamość increased due to the deportations of Czech and German Jews. The liquidation of the ghetto in Zamość started soon after opening the death camp in Bełżec. In autumn 1942, the Jews staying in the ghetto were forced to leave the city and to head for the transit ghetto in Izbica from where they were taken to the camps in Bełżec and Sobibór or they were killed in the local Jewish cemetery.
