Between June 16 and 18, 2014, students from the Junior High School No. 24 in Lublin and the Georg Büchner Junior High School in Darmstadt participated in the intercultural workshops on the history of the German occupation in the Lublin region and particularly on the fates of prisoners of the concentration camp KL Lublin. The programme in the Museum at Majdanek was preceded by classes which aimed at acquainting students with each other and integrating the participants of the project.
After visiting the historical exhibition, the students elaborated in groups on the following subjects: the fates of children imprisoned at Majdanek, the attitudes and motives of the perpetrators, the manifestations of resistance movement, women in KL Lublin and “Aktion Erntefest” (the “Harvest Festival” Action) – the mass execution of Jewish prisoners of Majdanek on November 3, 1943. The meeting with a former prisoner of KL Lublin, Zdzisław Badio, who was brought to Majdanek at the age of 17, was an illuminating and emotionally important experience for the participants of the educational project.
The Polish and German students presented results of their work during the summary of the project which took place in the Junior High School No. 24. Students from each of the working groups gave their peers an account of what they had learned from historical sources and memories of the prisoners of Majdanek.
