A visit to the authentic historical places connected to the Holocaust, like Majdanek, offers a remarkable possibility of an active exploration of history. Historical workshops, organised on 19–23 January for the students of Gymnasium in Datteln, in Nordrhein-Westfalen enabled them to learn about selected aspects of KL Lublin's history on the basis of historical sources, e.g. studies, commentaries, and archival documents.

Apart from the tour around the premises of the former concentration camp and the exhibition "The Prisoners of Majdanek,” the German youth worked in teams on various subjects. Topics referred to: the fate of the Majdanek prisoners, what makes ordinary people become perpetrators – biographies of SS men from KL Lublin, “Aktion Erntefest” – the execution of 18,000 Jewish prisoners of Majdanek, and economical aspects of camp's functioning. An important aspect of the program, both emotionally and cognitively, was the meeting with a former prisoner of Majdanek, Zdzisław Badio, who introduced the students to the reality of the camp, based on his own experiences from the period of the German occupation.
