On March 22, 2015, at the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec [MMPB] a ceremony was held to commemorate the murdered Jews of Żółkiew and Rawa Ruska. On this day, MMPB hosted 45 students from Ukraine along with their teachers.
During the visit to the Museum, they got to know the camp history and the history of the ghettos in Żółkiew and Rawa Ruska, which were on the main deportation route to Bełżec. To commemorate the murdered Jews, the youth lit lanterns and listened to the farewell letter to the son of deported Sarah Salzberg. The whole ceremony included a musical performance by Władyslaw Swacha from Zamość. At the end of the stay in Poland, the teenagers visited Zamość and got to know the multicultural history of the city, on which model Żółkiew was constructed.
Students from schools in Ukraine came to Poland within the cooperation with the German Association Bildungswerk Stanislaw Hantz, which financed the trip as an award for the best students. The Polish, German and Ukrainian educational institutions involved in the action plan to continue similar programmes in the following years.
