The 80th anniversary of operation “Reinhardt”

On the night of 16–17 March, 1942, the German police functionaries initiated the deportations from the ghetto in Lublin. Around 1,000 Jews, entirely oblivious of their fate, were herded into freight cars and sent to the death camp in Bełżec every day. The annihilation of Lublin’s Jewish community was the first step of the enormous extermination programme codenamed “Einsatz Reinhardt.”

The genocide of Jews conducted within its framework constituted an integral part of the Third Reich’s policy euphemistically called “the final solution to the Jewish question in Europe.”

The death toll of operation “Reinhardt” reached nearly 2,000,000 Jews murdered between 1942 and 1943. They perished in extermination camps – Treblinka, Bełżec, Sobibór – in Majdanek concentration camp, mass executions held during the “displacement operations” and inside labour camps, as well as in manhunts organised in cities, villages, and forests. The majority of victims were the Jewish inhabitants of the General Government, Bezirk Bialystok, and Reichskommissariat Ostland. Some were also from outside Poland – from the Third Reich, Austria, the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, Slovakia, Greece, Yugoslavia, the Netherlands, France, and Belarus.

In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of those events, the State Museum at Majdanek organises a variety of projects and events that will take place between mid-March 2022 and November 2023. Those activities include academic conferences, discussions and debates, new publications, educational seminars, and film projects. The main event organised this March will include a historical panel discussion held in the former headquarters of operation “Reinhardt” (today – Collegium Iuridicum of the Catholic University of Lublin. The debate will be attended by the leading scholars and researches devoted to the subject of the mass extermination of Jews.

The detailed schedule of commemorative events and projects is included in the calendar below.

Willing to reach the largest possible audiences, we develop additional projects in partnership with the Warsaw Ghetto Museum and the Jewish Historical Institute. Those measures include an outdoor exhibition – “The Extermination of Jews within the framework of the German operation ‘Reinhardt’” – that will be displayed in various cities of Poland; and a English version of “The Extermination of Jews in the General Government” – a historical study by Dariusz Libionka.
