The action “Żonkile”(Daffodils) in the Public Library in Lubaczów
On the 10th of May 2019 the Władysław Broniewski Municipal Public Library in Lubaczów together with the Museum and Memorial Site in Bełżec participated in the action “Żonkile", coinciding with the Holocaust Memorial Day and the 76th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
Young people from Tadeusz Kościuszko Secondary School in Lubaczów participated in this important educational event, organised by the Museum of the History of Polish Jews POLIN to remind the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. During the meeting, students watched the film: “Nie było żadnej nadziei. Powstanie w getcie warszawskim 1943”( There was no hope. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising 1943), portraying the situation of Jews in the capital city of Poland just before the World War II, everyday life in the ghetto and the history of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
In the second part of the meeting participants analysed the source text: the story of Krystyna Budnicka. In 1940, as an eight-year old girl, she was located in the Warsaw ghetto, where she spent 3,5 years, including 9 months spent in an underground hideout. In September 1943, the bunker she was hiding in was discovered by Germans. She was evacuated through the gutters to the Aryan side where - thanks to Żegota and Daughters of Charity - she luckily stayed tlil the end of the war. From her family of ten, she was the only one who survived.
The workshops ended with a discussion about this desperate, heroic impulse- a symbol of the fight for dignity, which the uprising was supposed to be and students’ reflections about the situation of Jews during World War II.
