The Days of Majdanek have already started
On October 16, the Days of Majdanek start at the Museum. It will be the first event organized in the modernized Visitor Service Centre. This year, visitors will have an opportunity to see the museum collections and archives, which are not usually available to guests, as well as to become familiar with the history of the former German concentration camp and activity of the Museum.
The programme for the event includes doors open days of the Archives and Collections Department, as well as free tours through the Museum exhibition. Much attention will be drawn to the 70th anniversary of the State Museum at Majdanek. For this reason, the picture show presenting the post-war camp and today’s camp will be organised, as well as the lecture on 70 years of the Museum’s activity. PROGRAMME Thursday, October 16 10.00-11.00; 11.30-12.30; 13.00-14.00 13.30-14.30 Doors open day of the Collections Department and Archives; visiting the archives and presenting the selected exhibit items and documents from the collections of the State Museum at Majdanek. We would like to invite all secondary school pupils, university students and adults. Tours through the archives and exhibitions will proceed in small groups. Next, the visitors will see some selected items and documents, and become familiar with the history of the camp at Majdanek and the fate of its prisoners. Places are limited. Please, register earlier – call us – 81710 28 55 (7.30 -15:30, Monday – Friday). 17.00-17.30 Presentation “Majdanek in the past and now – former concentration camp at Majdanek in the historical and modern photograph” During 70 years of the Museum’s activity, there were some significant changes in the historical landscape of Majdanek. This presentation will show, how the former concentration camp looked like, as well as the places, which were very important to its post-war history. The author, Krzysztof Tarkowski from the Archives of the State Museum at Majdanek, will compare the archival photographs of particular objects with modern ones. Lecture hall, Visitor Service Centre 17.40-18.40 Lecture “70 years of the State Museum at Majdanek” The State Museum at Majdanek is the oldest place of remembrance associated with World War II. From the very beginning of its activity, the Museum collected and secured the evidence of crime committed in the camp, as well as took some large-scale actions to popularize knowledge of Majdanek. Some initial difficulties, important visits and crucial projects, which significantly influenced development of the Museum, will be discussed by Agnieszka Kowalczyk-Nowak.
