The European Day of the Righteous
On March 6, we celebrate the European Day of Remembrance for Righteous. This holiday, established by the European Parliament in 2012, aims to honor the memory of people who opposed totalitarian regimes and mass crimes in the 20th and 21st centuries. In particular, we want to pay tribute to those who risked their own lives to save others and defended human dignity.
As part of the celebrations of this day, the Museum and Memorial Site in Bełżec organized educational workshops for young people from Tarnów under the title “Righteous Among the Nations”. The students had the opportunity to learn about the stories of Poles who saved Jews during the war, as well as to reflect on the meaning of courage and moral responsibility in the face of evil.
After the workshops, the wards took part in a tour of the museum’s grounds and exhibition. The youth could listen to stories about the tragic history of the camp, as well as about the fate of the Righteous from Bełżec who saved three Jews in the shadow of the existence of the extermination camp.
We pause to honor the memory of those who stood up to injustice. May their courage and sacrifice be an inspiration to us all.
