The newest Museum publication as a voice in the debate on the museum education in Poland

Education is playing more and more vital role in the museum practice in Poland. However, just few museums have their own didactic concepts and work on this issue. It is reflected by a small amount of academic publications devoted to museum didactics and pedagogy. The newest book issued by the Museum “Museum Education in Poland. Aspects, Contexts, Perspectives,” ed. Wiesław Wysok and Andrzej Stępnik, is an attempt to fill this gap and evaluate the state of the contemporary museum education, especially in the context of the museums – memorials.

The book contains seven articles and an afterword. They present various aspects of Polish and world museum education and its tendencies. They suggest also solutions, how to develop it. The authors, museologists and history educationalists, try to answer question if traditional museums can draw on the experience of museums – memorial sites, and vice versa. They ponder how history didactics can enrich museum practice. Professor Barbara Wagner writes in her review that “Museum Education in Poland…” is “a professional and thorough work, conveying an academic message.” Following the academic session on museum education held in 2012, the publication is another project made by the State Museum at Majdanek in cooperation with the Faculty of Historical Education and Cultural Heritage of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin.
