The volunteer from Germany at the State Museum at Majdanek

This year their volunteering programme completed Pascal Merten. We are extremely grateful for his presence and the successful cooperation. A few reflections about his stay in Lublin.

„One year ago, right after my graduation, I came to the State Museum at Majdanek to have my voluntary year with the organization Action Reconcilation Service for Peace (ARSP) in Poland. I wanted to learn much more about Poland, the polish language and the relations of german and polish history.(ARSP is an organization for international understanding and for workup of the german occupation time). On the trail of the crimes of the Nazis I started my service here in September 2013. The first few months I read special literature, related to this topic and I often visited the history authentic exposition to get in touch with this place and it's history. In winter I finally had my first guided tour and I was able to welcome an interested group from Germany. Much more guided tours followed. Additional to that my duties also included the preparation of materials for various groups, to take care of the groups and some translations into German. Furthermore, I visited weekly the Club of the former prisoners of the german concentration camps. I was listening to the people's stories and I worked together with them. I was pleased, that we developed a really friendly relationship. Now one year has passed and I learned a lot, in particular about the faith of the Poles in concentration camps of Nazi Germany during the occupation time. I would like to thank the State Museum at Majdanek and it's workers for this year, the cooperation and openess. I hope that I could contribute something to the museum's educational work. Even if Majdanek is a place of sadness and sorrow, the work and the coworkers will remain in good remembrance. Poland is a beautiful country just as it's friendly inhabitants and I definitely will miss Lublin”.
