V SEMINAR HISTORY - EDUCATION - REMEMBRANCE
On 6th June, a seminar entitled 'History - Education - Remembrance' was held - this was the fifth educational event dedicated to historians, teachers and regionalists. The meeting was held on the 18th anniversary of the opening of the Museum and Memorial Site in Bełżec, while also marking the 80th anniversary of "'Operation Reinhardt".
The lecture series was initiated by a presentation by Mrs Monika Samuel entitled: "SS-Sonderkommando Treblinka. The last Operation Reinhardt camp". The speaker presented a
historical outline of the Treblinka extermination camp, where approximately 800,000 Jews
and 2,000 Roma were murdered.
Then Mrs Mirella Rusek, an employee of the educational department of the State Museum at
Majdanek, took the floor. In her speech she presented educational possibilities of working
with the diary of Jadwiga Ankiewicz, a young prisoner of the Majdanek concentration camp.
The series of lectures ended with a speech by Mrs Czesława Borowik, a journalist of the
Polish Radio Lublin, who introduced the gathered guests to the issue of "oral history" as a
source which is an essential complement to historical knowledge.
The seminar ended with the lighting of candles at the Nisha Ohel, paying a tribute to the
victims of the Bełżec extermination camp.
We would like to thank all seminar attendees for their participation in the event.
