Workcamp at the memorial site

Students of the School Complex No. 4 in Zamość participated in a workcamp that took place on 22 May at the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec.

In the educational part of the workcamp, the volunteers got acquainted with the history of the death camp and the symbolism of the monument. The youth also took part in a museum lesson entitled “The death camp in Bełżec in the eyes of witnesses to history. Accounts by the survivors and inhabitants of Bełżec.” It’s a new educational proposal by the Museum –Memorial Site in Bełżec. Its aim is to pass the most important knowledge on functioning of the camp from the perspective of witnesses to history and those who survived the Holocaust. Didactic materials used during the lesson were testimonies given in 1945–1946 and in the 1960s as well as extracts from emotional accounts and recollections of people in whose neighbourhood the “death factory” was established.

During the workcamp, the volunteers also cleaned up the memorial site. They removed, among other things, tree branches from the southeastern part of the monument.
