Change of work rules on Mondays and holidays

We would like to inform you that from December 24, 2024, the working system of the State Museum at Majdanek and its branches - the Sobibor Memorial Museum and the Belzec Memorial Museum - will be changed. The museum will be completely inaccessible to visitors (the main gate and side gates will remain closed) on all Mondays and the following holidays: January 1 (New Year's Day), January 6 (“Epiphany”), Easter, Corpus Christi, November 11 (National Independence Day), and December 24-31.

On November 1 (All Saints' Day) at the State Museum at Majdanek in Lublin, only the parking lot and the passage to the municipal cemetery from Tetmajera Street to Cmentarna Street will be open. All the Museum's buildings and its exhibitions will remain closed.

    Classes for students of the Technical High School of Building and Surveying in Lublin

    About 100 students of the Technical High School of Building and Surveying in Lublin took part in educational classes including a lecture on the history of the concentration camp at Majdanek. The issue of dislocations from the Zamość Region was especially stressed. Stanisława Kruszewska – a former prisoner of Majdanek, told about them based on her own experience.

    Pupils from seven countries visited the Museum at Majdanek

    A group of students from seven countries – Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, and Poland – visited the State Museum at Majdanek on March 12, 2014. Their stay in Poland, coordinated by the Stefan Czarniecki Secondary School in Nisko, was related with an educational programme concerning the young people rights and their opportunities in modern Europe.

    Cooperation between the Museum and the Faculty of Philosophy of the Catholic University of Lublin

    Today director of the State Museum at Majdanek, Dr. Tomasz Kranz, and dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Rev. Prof. Marcin Tkaczyk, signed an agreement on cooperation between both institutions. It aims at close cooperation regarding student training and volunteering programmes.

    Polish-German discussion on “Café Auschwitz”

    The book launch of “Café Auschwitz” was accompanied with a discussion on Polish-German reconciliation, accounts by former prisoners of German concentration camps and coming to terms with the perpetrators. In the meeting, organized in the University Library of the Catholic University of Lublin, participated Dirk Brauns, the book author, Zofia Posmysz, a writer and former prisoner of KL Auschwitz, and Tomasz Kranz, director of the State Museum at Majdanek.

    Politics and remembrance - a lecture for students of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University

    A lecture by Krzysztof Banach - the head of the Exhibition Department of the State Museum at Majdanek – opened a series of meetings organized by the students of the Faculty of Humanities of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University entitled “Accounts by witnesses in the Polish martyrological museums.” The lecture concerning the character of exhibitions presented at the State Museum at Majdanek in the last 70 years took place on February 20, 2014.

    Historical traineeship at Majdanek and its effects

    Historical practice is one of active forms of extracurricular historical education offered by the State Museum at Majdanek. Such classes are based on discovering history by means of intellectual and emotional learning at an authentic historical site. Such a traineeship was participated by students from the Gesamtschule in Waltrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, on February 10-20, 2014.

    Discover and understand the past

    What happened during the German occupation of the Lublin Region in 1939-1944? What role played the Majdanek concentration camp in the German policy of persecuting the Poles and Jews? How did the Majdanek prisoners put up resistance against the Nazi terror? What were the perpetrators’ motives? These are some of questions which pupils from the Josef Albers Gymnasium in Bottrop, Germany, tried to answer during historical workshops organized at the State Museum at Majdanek on February 11-13, 2014.

    “Educational Visits to the State Museum at Majdanek. A Guide for Teachers” edited by Tomasz Kranz is downloadable from the Museum website. It is one of many books issued under the Museum imprint which are devoted to educational issues. At the same time, it is the first book addressed directly to teachers.

    Meeting with a witness to history

    On February 5, 2014, pupils from the Lower Secondary School No. 19 in Lublin met with a witness to history – Stanisława Kruszewska. The former female prisoner of the concentration camp at Majdanek shared her experiences related with dislocation of her village – Dereźnia Solska in the Zamość Region, and memoirs concerning her stay in the camp.

    During a press conference organized by the State Museum at Majdanek, the local journalists had an opportunity to learn about the paths of the Museum development and planned exhibitions, as well as academic and popularizing activities. The aim of the conference was to remind about the round anniversary of the Museum establishment and to highlight its role in the modern museum discourse.

    70 years of the State Museum at Majdanek

    In the beginning of November 1944, in less than four months after the liquidation of the concentration camp at Majdanek, the first martyrdom museum in the world documenting events connected with the Second World War was established on its grounds. In 2014, the State Museum at Majdanek marks the 70th anniversary of its functioning. It will be an opportunity to remind of the Museum activities to date and reflect on the development of similar institutions in Europe. We present the most important events connected with the Museum jubilee and the 70th anniversary of the Majdanek camp liquidation.

    Holocaust memorials – study trip to memorial sites in Poland

    As part of its social and political education programme, Österreichische Gewerkschaftsjugend, a Vienna organization for young trade union members, has been organizing study trips to memorial sites in Poland. The aim of the seminars is to visit historical sites relating to the Second World War and to commemorate victims of the Nazi Socialism. Among the museums visited each year by the Austrians, there is the State Museum at Majdanek.

    “Shoes of the Dead” – exhibition in Dresden devoted to the victims of the Holocaust

    On the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and due to the 70th anniversary of the Majdanek camp liquidation that will be held later this year, theBundeswehr Military History Museum in Dresden organized the exhibition commemorating families from Dresden that were persecuted at the time of the National Socialism. The State Museum at Majdanek lent a jacket and hat to be showcased at the exhibition.

    Due to deteriorating weather conditions, please postpone your visit to the Museum. Heavy snow falls resulted also in some limitations in visiting he Monument at the Museum - Memorial Site in Bełżec.

    Millions of people visited the Museum

    Today director of the State Museum at Majdanek, Dr. Tomasz Kranz, and dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Robert Litwiński, signed a letter of intent concerning joint initiatives. – This act can be seen as a symbol and confirmation of cooperation that has been developing since a few years – said Tomasz Kranz during the meeting.

    On December 7-13, for the sixth time, a seminar for Ukrainian teachers entitled “Holocaust in Western Ukraine and Eastern Poland,” has been organized by the State Museum at Majdanek and Ukrainian Centre for Holocaust Studies in Kyiv. As part of the project, study visits to the State Museum at Majdanek, Museum of the Former Death Camp in Sobibór, and Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec took place.
