Change of work rules on Mondays and holidays

We would like to inform you that from December 24, 2024, the working system of the State Museum at Majdanek and its branches - the Sobibor Memorial Museum and the Belzec Memorial Museum - will be changed. The museum will be completely inaccessible to visitors (the main gate and side gates will remain closed) on all Mondays and the following holidays: January 1 (New Year's Day), January 6 (“Epiphany”), Easter, Corpus Christi, November 11 (National Independence Day), and December 24-31.

On November 1 (All Saints' Day) at the State Museum at Majdanek in Lublin, only the parking lot and the passage to the municipal cemetery from Tetmajera Street to Cmentarna Street will be open. All the Museum's buildings and its exhibitions will remain closed.

    On November 25-26, students from theMagdeburg-Stendal University ofApplied Sciences took part in educational classes devoted to the German policy in the occupied Lublin District in 1939-1944. In the first part of the project, the participants visited the open-air exhibition at the State Museum at Majdanek and had a chance to independently deepen their knowledge about the history of the concentration camp in Lublin. They made use of historical studies and source materials, including accounts by former prisoners, biographies of the perpetrators, and archival records.

    Students get familiar with their common history – a project by museums in Bełżec and Sobibór

             On November 27, 2013, young people from the Complex of Schools No. 6 and Lower Secondary School in Lubycza Królewska, as well as from the Complex of Vocational Schools and the 2nd Secondary School in Włodawa took part in a project aiming at commemoration of the victims of German death camps.

    All roads and pavements on the Museum grounds have already been renovated

    The last stage of renovating roads, pathways, and car parks has already finished at the State Museum at Majdanek. These works were a key part of the programme of modernizing the institution started in 2007.

    Launch of the newest book by the State Museum at Majdanek – an anthology of memoirs by witnesses of action “Erntefest”

    The State Museum at Majdanek invites to the promotion of the book issued to mark the 70th anniversary of action “Erntefest.” It is entitled „Krwawa środa. 3 listopada 1943 w pamięci świadków” [Bloody Wednesday. November 3, 1943, in the Memory of the Witnesses], selected and edited by Beata Siwek-Ciupak and Kamila Czuryszkiewicz. The promotion will be held in the Łopaciński Voivodship Libraryon November 7 at 5 p.m.

    The newest museum publications



    Books related to the history of Majdanek have been published under the imprint of the State Museum at Majdanek, including outline of its outline and an anthology of accounts by witnesses of the mass execution of November 3, 1943. On sale is also a publication on the museum education.

    Visit of Desi Rinpoche to the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec

    On October 31, 2013, Desi Rinpoche visited the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec. He used to be a private secretary of the 14th Dalai Lama. At present he is teaching in Poland.

    Changes of opening hours at the museums at Majdanek, in Bełżec, and in Sobibór

    Starting from November 1, opening hours of the State Museum at Majdanek and Museum of the Former Death Camp in Sobibór are changed. In the winter season, part of the museum exhibition is also closed.

    Visitor Service Centre closed on January 25-26

    Due to restoration works, the Visitor Servicer Centre will be closed on January 25-26. The renovation will be completed on January 27. On that day the commemoration ofthe International Holocaust Remembrance Day will take place in the Visitor Service Centre.

    70th anniversary of operation „Erntefest”

    On November 3, the 70th anniversary of operation "Erntefest” was observed that was the biggest execution by firing squad in the history of the German concentration camps, known as Bloody Wednesday. It resulted in death of over 18 thousand Jews. Tribute to the murdered was paidat the foot of the obelisk next to the Mausoleum.

    Renovation of roads on the grounds of the Museum

    On September 16, the next stage of renovating roads and pavements starts at the State Museum at Majdanek. The works will be carried out in the section of the road and pavements leading from the intersection near barracks no. 38 (in the shape of L letter) to the Mausoleum. The renovation works are to be over in the middle of November.

    New commemoration in Sobibór

    The architectural-landscape concept which will be completed in the area of the former death camp in Sobibór, has already been chosen. Its authors are: Marcin Urbanek, Piotr Michalewicz, and Łukasz Mieszkowski. The concept was awarded with the 1st prize in the international architectural contest organized by the State Museum at Majdanek in cooperation with the Foundation „Polish-German Reconciliation.”

    70th anniversary of the prisoners’ uprising in the Sobibór camp

    On October 14, 1943, a revolt broke out in the German death camp in Sobibór resulting in escape of 300 inmates. About 60 of them survived the war. Three among of the group took part in the ceremony organized by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage at the Museum of the Former Death Camp in Sobibór on the 70th anniversary of these events. Philip Bialowitz, Thomas Blatt, and Jules Schelvis – participants in the uprising – were decorated by the President of the Republic of Poland with the Officer's Crosses of the Order of Merit.

    Exhibition depicting the history of the Sobibór death camp

    Starting from this weekend, a new open-air exhibition will be presented at the Museum of the Former Death Camp in Sobibór. It is devoted to the history of the German death camp which was constructed in the Sobibór woods in 1942. The opening of the exhibition is part of the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the camp prisoners’ revolt. The ceremony, organized by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage,is held in Sobibór on October 14, 2013.

    Young politicians from Brandenburg at Majdanek

    Hosted by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, a group of young politicians from Brandenburg took part in a study visit to Poland on September 30 to October 3, 2013. Their Polish partners were politicians, scientists, journalists, and other representatives of social life. As part of their trip, the guests from Germany visited the State Museum at Majdanek as well. They were guided through the permanent historical exhibition, open-air exhibition, and temporary exhibition devoted to the displaced from the Zamość region.

    On October 2, 2013, the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec organized study stays for two groups of pupils from the Jan Zamoyski Secondary School in Zamość. They were guided through the historical exhibition and got familiar with the symbolism of the monument. Classes covered lectures combined with multimedia presentations entitled: Extermination of Jews in the General Government. Camps of “Operation Reinhard,” and On the Jewish tradition of Everyday Life – Polish Jews Culture.
