    Today, a public presentation of the winners of the competition on the architectural-landscape concept of the memorial on the area of the former German Nazi death camp in Sobibór – a branch of the State Museum at Majdanek – took place in the newly opened Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw.

    Thanks to efforts made by the Scientific Centre of the Polish Academy of Science in Vienna, papers from the conference on museums of martyrdom in Poland and Austria, co-organized by the State Museum at Majdanek, were issued in print.

    69th anniversary of the camp liquidation and opening of a multimedia exhibition devoted to people displaced from the Zamość Region

    The State Museum at Majdanek and the Society for the Protection of Majdanek invite to the commemoration of the 69th anniversary of the camp liquidation and the 70th anniversary of the displacement of the Zamość Region inhabitants to Majdanek. It starts on July 22 at 1 p.m. The agenda includes opening of an exhibition in barracks no. 62 (a new exhibiting building).

    Learn, understand, remember. Volunteers of the Action Reconciliation Service for Peace at Majdanek

    On July 1-5, volunteers of the German Association Action Reconciliation Service for Peace met at Majdanek as part of a seminar devoted to German occupation of the Lublin Region and ways of commemorating victims of the Nazi dictatorship, especially to the history of the German concentration camp KL Lublin.

    New donations in the museum collections

    Archival collections of the State Museum at Majdanek have been supplemented with documents and photographs of Genowefa and Leon Kosteccy. They have been donated to the Museum by Maria Droba and Krzysztof Willmann. The collections include, among many other things, original postcards documenting the imprisonment of the couple at Majdanek.

    Difficult heritage. A study trip for students from the State Police School in Hamburg to memorial sites in the Lublin region

    With reference to the events from 71 years, students from the State Police School in Hamburg visited the Lublin region. In 1942, in Józefów, its monstrous activity started the Hamburg Reserve Police Battalion 101 sent to the Lublin District as part of the so called Sonderaktion Polen. From July 1942 to November 1943, German policemen from this unit shot and deported to the death camps tens of thousands of Jewish children, women and men.

    How to talk about difficult past? How to create good relations between Polish and German youth? These and other questions were raised during an international project devoted to the German occupation of the Lublin region and fates of Majdanek prisoners. It was participated by pupils from the Georg Büchner Gimnasium in Darmstadt and the Lower Secondary School No. 24 in Lublin.

    The entrance gate to the Museum leading through the Monument to Struggle and Martyrdom closed

    We kindly inform that since July 1, 2013, the gate leading to the Monument to Struggle and Martyrdom will be closed. The only accessible entrance to the Museum from Droga Męczenników Majdanka Street will be viathe main gate.

    The State Museum at Majdanek would like to inform that during August and September 2010 there will be renovation works of roads and pavementson the grounds of the Museum. Therafore,some roads, pavements and car parks will be temporarily inaccessible for visitors. >>>

    Sobibór – archaeology of memory

    This October, the 70th anniversary of a revoltprepared by Jewish prisoners of the German death camp in Sobibór will be marked. As a result of the uprising, a numerous group of prisoners escaped, from whom about 50 people survived the war. Shortly after the revolt the camp was liquidated and traces of the crimes were erased by the SS staff. Conducted on the grounds of the former camp since 2001, archaeological research helps to unravel some mysteries of Sobibór. In each stage of the excavation works, new discoveries are made that, compared with accounts by the survivors, supplement the knowledge about Sobibór to date.

    “Young workers for the future” – Polish-German workcamp

    “Young people shape the future” is a name of the project for young people from Germany and Poland. It took place at the State Museum at Majdanek on May 21-25. Young craftsmen helped Museum employees to conserve the post-camp relics, including stretchers-camp beds. Co-organizers of the project were Katholische Jugendsozialarbeit from North Rhine-Westphalia and Provincial Headquarters of Voluntary Labour Corps in Lublin.

    On May 27, 2013, atthe State Museum at Majdanek a meeting was heldwith William Brand – a translator, lecturer, literary agent, who translated into English books by Ryszard Kapuściński and many publications on the Holocaust.

    On April 24, the Museum at Majdanek played host to Krystyna Budnicka, a member to the Association “Children of the Holocaust.” She told about her fates and fates of her family, and appealed to pupils to assume responsibility for future which should be based on respect for others. The meeting was preceded with a presentation and lecture devoted to the Warsaw ghetto.

    An international group of pupils from six countries – France, Greece, Spain, Romania, Turkey, and Poland – visited the State Museum at Majdanek on April 10. Their visit to the Lublin region was organized by Lower Secondary School No. 1 in Kurów as part of the Comenius project. The education-cultural project acquainted pupils with the history and culture of our region.
