On 20 May, free guided tours of the historical exhibition and memorial site took place as part of the celebrations of the International Museum Day. The visitors also listened to the lecture “The extermination of Jews in the General Government. ‘Aktion Reinhardt’ camps” in the education hall.

One of the important tendencies in the development of museums is aspirations to create an imagination-stirring message and to trigger an interaction between visitors and museum exhibitions. The key question appears to be definifion of a 'museum experience' as well as its make-up. The participants of a panel debate organised by the Museum at Majdanek will discuss this issue, among many other thing. The debate takes place on May 18 at 12.00.

“Zagłada Żydów w Generalnym Gubernatorstwie. Zarys problematyki” constitutes a synthetic description of the Holocaust carried out by the Germans in the years 1942-1943 within the framework of the so called “Aktion Reinhardt.” The newest book by prof. Dariusz Libionka published by the State Museum at Majdanek is earmarked for a wide readership.

On 17 April 2017, the Żonkile project was completed within the International Holocaust Remembrence Day marking the 74thanniversary of the outbreak of the Uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto. The project was organised by the Tomaszów Lubelski Branch of the Pedagogical Library in Zamość, in cooperation with the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec. The participants of the project were students of the B. Głowacki’s School Complex no. 1 in Tomaszów Lubelski.

75 years ago, on March 17, 1942, the first transports of Jews deported from the Lublin ghetto and Lvov arrived to the death camp in Bełżec. These deportations were the beginning of “Aktion Reinhardt.” About 2 million victims of this genocidal operation were commemorated at the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec.

On March 15, 2017, a group of students with their history professor John C. Swanson from the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga took part in a study tour to Izbica, Zamość and the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec.

Commemorating ceremonies, exhibitions, publications, educational projects and discussions by historians are among the events planned by the Museum as part of the 75th anniversary of “Aktion Reinhardt.” They will be held between March 16, 2017, and November 3, 2018. In this period we will regularly publish on our website (in section “History”) materials on history of the extermination of Jews in the General Government in 1942–1943.

In 2016, number of people who visited the State Museum at Majdanek increased again. Nearly a half of 213,237 visitors to the Museum and its branches came from abroad (93 227 people).

For the second time, the State Museum at Majdanek participated successfully in the programme “Accessible culture” of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. This year, about 2,500 students of intermediate and high schools from whole Poland took part in free museum classes organized by the State Museum at Majdanek and the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec. The number of participants almost doubled when compared with 2015.

On 12 September, Minister of the Interior and Administration Mariusz Błaszczak visited the Museum - Memorial Site in Bełżec as part of his stay in the Lublin Region.

On 30 August 2016 in the Social Welfare Home for Veterans in Biłgoraj, a lecture combined with a multimedia presentation “Holocaust Survivors from the Bełżec camp”. Participants to the meeting were made familiar with the history of operating of the death camp in Bełżec. The lecture included a presentation of the profiles of survivors – Rudolf Reder, Chaim Hirszman, as well as a number of other people whose post-war fates are unknown.

On 25 August, the Museum in Bełżec hosted educators from France, who attended Summer University workshops, organised by the Parisian Mémorial de la Shoah.

On 26 August, the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec hosted educators from Ukraine, who arrived in the course of their annual study visit organised by the Ukrainian Centre for Holocaust Studies in Kiev.

On July 14, participants of the World Youth Day in the Diocese of Zamość-Lubaczów visited the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec. Pilgrims from Zhovkva and Lviv in Ukraine have become acquainted with the history of the German death camp in Bełżec, visited a historical exhibition and the grounds of the commemoration.

On 5-6 July 2016 Museum–Memorial Site in Bełżec and the State Museum at Majdanek hosted a group of historians, teachers, educators and employees of universities from different countries – the participants of the International Summer Academy "Auschwitz – History, Memory and Education" organized by the The International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust.

The Lublin region has a long museological tradition dating back to the beginning of the 19th century, when the Temple of Sibyl was built in Puławy by the Czartoryski family. Today, there are 48 museums and museum branches in the region visited by over one million people a year. The role of these institutions in the contemporary tourism in the Lublin region was discussed by the participants to the panel debate organized by the Museum at Majdanek.
