Change of work rules on Mondays and holidays

We would like to inform you that from December 24, 2024, the working system of the State Museum at Majdanek and its branches - the Sobibor Memorial Museum and the Belzec Memorial Museum - will be changed. The museum will be completely inaccessible to visitors (the main gate and side gates will remain closed) on all Mondays and the following holidays: January 1 (New Year's Day), January 6 (“Epiphany”), Easter, Corpus Christi, November 11 (National Independence Day), and December 24-31.

On November 1 (All Saints' Day) at the State Museum at Majdanek in Lublin, only the parking lot and the passage to the municipal cemetery from Tetmajera Street to Cmentarna Street will be open. All the Museum's buildings and its exhibitions will remain closed.

    72nd anniversary of transports from Pawiak to Majdanek

    To commemorate the Polish political prisoners deported from Pawiak prison to KL Lublin, the Museum organised a meeting on 16th January. It was devoted to Danuta Brzosko-Mędryk, the former prisoner of Pawiak prison and KL Lublin, brought to Majdanek in the first transport of political prisoners from Warsaw on 18th January 1943.

    State Museum at Majdanek during Christmas period

    Information about opening hours and accessibility of State Museum at Majdanek between December 19, 2014 and January 1, 2015:



    The outdoor exhibition and historical buildings are accessible for visitors everyday between 9.00 – 16.00.



    Between December 19 and 31, 2014 but also on January 1, 2015 the Visitor Service Centre will be closed.



    The historical exhibition in barrack nr 62 will be closed from December 22, 2014 to January 1, 2015.

    First-year students of Cultural Animation at Majdanek

    On November 25, 2014, first-year students of Cultural Animation of the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology from the University of Maria Curie-Skłodowska took part in the meeting with employees of the Education Department and Visitor Service Centre of the State Museum at Majdanek. It was the part of the program “Methodical workshops” in which students, led by teachers, visit public cultural institutions in Lublin, non-governmental organizations and private entities realizing the cultural activity.

Areas for experiencing and learning history" was ate highlight of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Museum at Majdanek It was held on 19-20 November at the Visitor Service Centre of the State Museum at Majdanek.

    On martyrological museums on the jubilee conference

    On November 19 and 20, on the 70th anniversary of its functioning, the State Museum at Majdanek organises scientific conference entitled “Martyrological Museums in Europe. Space of Presenting and Experiencing History” under the honorary patronage of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. The conference is closed. It will be held in Polish and German.

    Anniversary of “Bloody Wednesday” at Majdanek

    On November 3, 1943, over 18 thousand Jews were murdered at Majdanek. It was the biggest execution by firing squad in the history of the German concentration camps, known as Bloody Wednesday. Everyone who would like to pay tribute to the murdered, by lighting candles and laying down wreaths at the foot of the obelisk next to the Mausoleum, is invited to the Museum at Majdanek on November 3, at 12.00.

    Observances of the 70th anniversary of the State Museum at Majdanek are held in November. On this occasion, the institution has published a book entitled “70 Years of the State Museum at Majdanek.” Apart from that the 26th issue of “Zeszyty Majdanka” including an article on the Museum’s exhibitions to date will soon appear in print.

    Changes of opening hours at the museums at Majdanek, in Bełżec, and in Sobibór

    Starting from November 1, opening hours of the State Museum at Majdanek and Museum of the Former Death Camp in Sobibór are changed. In the winter season, part of the museum exhibition is also closed.

    On October 22 and 23, 2014, post-graduate students of History Institute at Maria Skłodowska-Curie University in Lublin visited the State Museum at Majdanek. The visit was organized as part of the course named “Modern methods and techniques of running classes” run by Prof. Andrzej Stępnik.

    On October 21st, 2014, the youth from matura classes of the Secondary School No. 2 in Lubartów participated in the lesson that aimed at learning about the fate and experiences of former Majdanek prisoners. The programme took place in the modernized Visitor Service Centre where there are up-to-date classrooms equiped with appliances suitable for educational projects using interactive methods simultaneously for two groups.

    Unusual commemoration of Jews from Izbica deported to Bełżec

    On October 20 and 21, 2014, the Association Bildungswerk Stanislaw Hantz eV from Germany, Comprehensive Primary and Secondary School Complex in Izbica and the Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec organized celebrations to commemorate the extermination of Jews from Izbica and Jews deported to Izbica between 1939 and 1942 from Częstochowa, Vienna, Frankfurt am Main and many others.

    On October 16, the Days of Majdanek start at the Museum. It will be the first event organized in the modernized Visitor Service Centre. This year, visitors will have an opportunity to see the museum collections and archives, which are not usually available to guests, as well as to become familiar with the history of the former German concentration camp and activity of the Museum.

    Modernization works in the Visitor Service Centre have finished. Apart from that a new welcoming board has been erected at the entrance to the Museum. The investments provide new possibilities for the Museum educational and popularizing practice.

    Death camp in Sobibór – new historical findings

    The State Museum at Majdanek presents the results of the latest research concerning the history of the German death camp in Sobibór. This study was carried out by Robert Kuwałek, a researcher working for our institution who suddenly died in 2014. In the study he tried to determine the balance of camp victims. At the end of his last research work there is an important conclusion to find which grows in importance in the light of finding the gas chamber foundations:

    A group of young people from Schiller’s Junior High School in Münster, which came to Lublin to take part in the school exchange with Staszic High School No. 1., visited the State Museum at Majdanek. The programme of educational activities included guided tour through the grounds of the former camp and visiting the outdoor exhibition as well as the exhibition "The Prisoners of Majdanek."
