    Opening of the exhibition of photos by Leszek Mądzik

    I went on a journey with my camera, believing that everything that belonged to this world has been taken away by the memory. I feel that a detail or texture can also speak and create tension, cause unrest and call back the atmosphere of the past tragic events– Leszek Mądzik describes his impressions of photo sessions held at Majdanek. Their effects are photographs of the grounds and buildings of the former concentration camp. They are displayed at the exhibition opened at the Litewski Square in Lublin.

    For the ninth time the State Museum at Majdanek organized in cooperation with the “One World” Association an international Project for volunteers „Workcamp in the Memorial Site.” For two weeks, from August 13 to 24, volunteers from Germany, Czech Republic and Poland were learning the history of the concentration camp at Majdanek and worked in favour of the Memorial Site.

    Weekend Filled with History – free guided tour

    W dniu 18 sierpnia br. Państwowe Muzeum na Majdanku zaprosiło wszystkie osoby zainteresowane II wojną światową na bezpłatne zwiedzanie z przewodnikiem terenu byłego obozu koncentracyjnego na Majdanku i ekspozycji muzealnej. Kolejne, letnie spotkanie z historią poświęcone było zagładzie Żydów w związku z 70. rocznicą „Akcji Reinhardt”.

    Renovation of roads and pavements at the Museum

    On August 8, renovation of the road leading from the main entrance gate to the museum exhibition starts at the State Museum at Majdanek. It is another stage of the modernization of the museum roads and pavements. The works finish on September 28.

    Exhibition of prisoners’ shoes open to visitors

    From August 1, the exhibition of prisoners’ civilian shoes has been re-opened in barracks 52. Shoes were disinfected, cleaned, sorted, and counted. They have been presented in renovated display cases. Exhibition arrangement has also been changed.

    Renovation of the old crematorium

    Another renovation works start at the Museum at Majdanek. This time, they cover the old crematorium. It is the first renovation of the building on such a large-scale.

    68th anniversary of the liquidation of the Majdanek camp

    We gather at the feet of the Gate-Monument that is supposed to be […] calling for remembrance of those who suffered and were killed here. Their fate should be a warning for future generations – with these words director of the State Museum at Majdanek, Tomasz Kranz, welcomed participants in the ceremony of the 68th anniversary of KL Lublin liquidation. This year it coincided with the 70th anniversary of “Operation Reinhard.”

    Zrzeszenie Prześladowanych przez Reżim Nazistowski i Polsko-Niemieckie Towarzystwo Republiki Federalnej Niemiec we współpracy z Muzeum na Majdanku zorganizowało w dniach 8-14 lipca podróż studyjną do miejsc pamięci na Lubelszczyźnie. Celem projektu było poznanie wydarzeń z okresu okupacji niemieckiej oraz form upamiętnienia ofiar nazistowskich prześladowań i zbrodni.

    Young volunteers preserve memory and peace

    W dniach 1-14 lipca młodzież z Niemiec, Ukrainy, Wielkiej Brytanii i Polski spotkała się w Lublinie w ramach workcampu organizowanego przez Akcję Znaku Pokuty – Służba dla Pokoju. Spotkanie przygotowali i poprowadzili się wolontariusze tej organizacji przebywający od 10 miesięcy w Lublinie: Franziska Rolf z Niemiec oraz Yuriy Matuschak z Ukrainy. Głównym tematem workcampu była zagłada Żydów na terenie Lubelszczyzny oraz dziedzictwo kulturowe Żydów w tym regionie. Praca, jaką wykonywali wolontariusze, odbywała się w dwóch miejscach – Państwowym Muzeum na Majdanku oraz w Józefowie Biłgorajskim.

    On creation of museum landscape and narrative

    In the museological reflection, which recently is being more and more intensively developed, usage of the effect of genius loci in the museum narrative, as well as issues related to visualizing the past and memory by means of museum exhibitions attract special attention. Two articles issued in the latest volume of “Zeszyty Majdanka” [Notebooks of Majdanek] are devoted to these questions. They are available in pdf. files and present voice of our institution in the debate on Polish historical museology.

    Followers of various religions prayed for peace at Majdanek

    25 years ago, Pope John Paul II prayed at Majdanek. On July 8, an ecumenical service was held in the same place, participated by 1,300 people. The multireligious meeting at Majdanek was an important part of this year’s camp for scholarship holders of the “Work of the New Millennium” Foundation.

    New museum publications will help teachers and foreign visitors

    Preparing youngsters to visit the State Museum at Majdanek is simpler now, and English-speaking tourists can deepen their knowledge on the history of the former German concentration camp KL Lublin. It is facilitated by three new publications which were issued under the imprint of the State Museum at Majdanek.

    Excessive heat warning

    Due to the heat wave, the State Museum at Majdanek reminds visitors to take hats and water with them. It takes about 2 hours to tour around the museum exhibition.

    Learn, understand, remember

    On June 24-29, volunteers from the Action Reconciliation – Service for Peace took place in an educational seminar devoted to a history of the German occupied Lublin Region. The classes covered lectures, documentary screenings on the history of concentration camps, visiting grounds of the former camp at Majdanek and the historical exhibition, as well as study trips to other places related to the Holocaust.

    Tablets with accounts by witnesses enriched the Museum exhibition

    […] We marched in step to the gate. The gate opened and they shoved us into the chaos; we found ourselves in the human anthill. We looked at each other and understood instantly: We were trapped! Such fragments of accounts by former prisoners have been available for people visiting the Museum since the beginning of July. 17 tablets bearing memoirs of people imprisoned in the camp and members of the SS garrison have been installed on the exhibition.

    Where the evil was born

    As part of educational projects held in lower secondary schools, a group of students from the “U Konarskiego” Non-Public Lower Secondary School in Tarnów visited grounds of the former German concentration camp at Majdanek and the death camp in Bełżec. Their visit to the museums commemorating victims of the Nazism was a part of the project called “Where the evil was born.” It is a series of visits to various memorial sites relating to extermination of Jews.

    Doscover history together

    Pupils from the Georg Büchner Gimnasium in Darmstadt and the Lower Secondary School No. 24 in Lublin took part in an educational project devoted to the history of KL Lublin. It took place at the State Museum at Majdanek on June 13-18, 2012.

    70th anniversary of “Operation Reinhard”

    2012 marks 70 years since accomplishment of one of the most atrocious crimes perpetrated by Germans during the Second World War – “Operation Reinhard.” It covered Polish Jews from the General Government and Białystok Bezirk, but also Jewish inhabitants of many Germany-occupied countries. It was started with deportations to the death camp in Bełżec, on March 17, 1942. Starting from April 1942, gas chambers of the death camp in Sobibór were functioning, and on July 23, the death camp in Treblinka started its operation. The main wave of deportations fell in July-September 1942, when the biggest transports set off to the death camps in Bełżec and Treblinka, which carried even 8,000-9,000 Jews each. Deportations covered all districts of the General Government then.

    25th anniversary of the visit of Pope John Paul II at Majdanek

    June 9, 1987, is one of the most significant dates in the history of the State Museum at Majdanek. On that day the former concentration camp was visited by Pope John Paul II.

    Facilities for the cyclists visiting Majdanek

    In front of the Visitor Service Centre of the State Museum at Majdanek bicycle stands have been installed. Prior to visiting the museum exhibition, the cyclists can attach to them their two-wheeled vehicles.

    “Young workers for the future” – Polish-German workcamp

    “Young people shape the future” is a name of the project for young people from Germany and Poland. It took place at the State Museum at Majdanek on May 21-25. Young craftsmen helped Museum employees to conserve the post-camp relics, including stretchers-camp beds. Co-organizers of the project were Katholische Jugendsozialarbeit from North Rhine-Westphalia and Provincial Headquarters of Voluntary Labour Corps in Lublin.

    Museum collections have been enriched with video records. Registered accounts are devoted to, among others, functioning of ghettos in Lublin, grounds of the Majdanek camp after its liquidation, and post-war fates of a former prisoner of KL Lublin.
